CityScape Walk
Program notes
The original inspiration for this piece came after I was out driving around the town. I thought to myself, what might I, a civilian, be listening to in my own music device, or car radio, if I just happen to be out for a walk or a drive through the neighborhood at night.
CityScape Walk plays around with the voicings and conversations that are had between string instruments when played together and with one another. As a woodwind player, most of my exposure to strings has been sitting directly behind the large pool of strings in the orchestra, or as an audience member when I go and watch the symphony.
This piece invites the listener to imagine themselves on a walk during a busy rush hour night in the city, or their own neighborhood, simply admiring and taking in the busyness of the late night rush, as they travel or merely wander amongst the busy environment.
As the work comes to an end, the listener has reached their destination, wondering what the next adventure may bring.
